Introduction to my Youtube Channel!

“The beginning is always today.” —Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

Hello and Welcome to another blog post!

The past couple of weeks have been interesting as I uploaded two videos on youtube, where I sat in front of the camera and introduced myself and talked about types of videos I will be creating.

The second one is a how I make an avocado smoothie video.

I was very nervous to film. It literally took me a couple of hours to warm up to talking to the camera and the ring light which blinded me! Despite the difficulties, I am so proud of myself for taking such a big step, as I hesitated filming myself for a long time.

In time, I know I will get more comfortable speaking in front of the camera. For now, please bare with my stiff facial expressions. I promise, I am not like that at all!

I have many ideas about what type of videos I would like to film such as recipes, fashion hauls, make up favorites, maybe a little bit of fitness and lifestyle (i.e how to deal with arthritis and psoriasis)

I am also hesitant about filming my hands on camera, if you didn’t know , I have arthritis in both my hands and sometimes I feel self conscious about the appearance of both after developing a few deformities. You can read more about this in my previous blog posts.

I am so eager to create, share and connect with everyone however I know it will take time. I am gaining my confidence everyday.

Thank you for reading this post!

22 things I’ve learned in 22 years

Happy second of July! It is getting rather chilly here in South Africa! I am freezing! As we are entering the winter season, the northern hemisphere is welcoming summer with open arms! I can’t say I’m not jealous! Nevertheless, this calls for bringing out the warmer blankets, hot water bottles, layering up and using the weather as an excuse to drink hot coco every day.  Am I right? Ok, so winter isn’t that bad at all!

Anyhow, lets move on, I was inspired to write this blog post as I read one a few weeks ago. It was such a pleasant post, I had to give it a go!

I turned 22 last year in November and I’m aware people usually post this around their birthday but I’m going to post it now anyways. I was inspired as the title got me thinking about everything I have learned from a little girl until now, I chose these specific points as they were the ones that stood out to me and somehow made an impact in my life. They have made me who I am today, and they are relatable to everyone.

22 things I have learned in 22 years:

  1. I have learned that the saying “time flies” is SO TRUE!
  2. I have learned that mum is always right – As you get get older your mum truly becomes your best friend.
  3. I have learned that it is ok if you don’t know what you want to do in life. You are always changing and growing. You are not the person you were at the age of 18. You do not have the same goals.
  4. I have learned that exercise is essential! You’re aging! You have to nourish your body and take care of it.
  5. I have learned that you will lose touch with people, everyone you meet is not meant to stay in your life. You are growing, so are they. Everyone has their own path and unique destination. You will meet new people.
  6. I have also learned that it is possible to become closer to someone even at  long distance. Your friendship can survive and grow!
  7. I have learned to appreciate time spent with family. I can honestly say I cherish all the moments I spend with my grandparents, cousins, my brother and parents.
  8. I have learned to TAKE PICTURES of everything. Its always nice to go down memory lane. Remember to take videos too!
  9. I have learned to love gardening.
  10. I have to learned to NEVER give up. To never give up on myself, my family and friends. If I have failed, it does not mean I am a failure, it just means that I need to TRY again and TRY differently.
  11. I have learned about different cultures! Travel as much as you can! Immerse yourself in history and cuisine. Surrounding yourself with people from all over the world teaches you that everyone is the same regardless of race and color.
  12. I have learned about different languages and have become familiar to different currencies.
  13. I have learned to live away from home. Two years at boarding school and at University.
  14. I have learned to become self dependent.
  15. I have learned that life will bring obstacles, which you will have no control over.
  16. I have learned to Never put myself down, regardless of what society or someone says about me.
  17. I have learned that people will want to see you fail, they will want you to not succeed, they will say you can’t do it. However you must take that as fuel, fuel to keep the fire burning within yourself. You need to focus on you. Be you. Do you. Keep shining!
  18. I have learned to not tell everyone all my dreams and goals. Yes, sometimes it is good to put things out into the universe but remember its none of anyone else’s business.
  19. I have learned to make god a priority, by putting god first your faith gets stronger. It is important for self growth, a clear mind and direction.
  20. I have learned that stress and worrying/overthinking etc can make you physically sick.
  21. I have learned what it means to have a broken heart. I have experienced heart ache and survived it. The saying time heals all wounds is sooo true, it may take 6 months, it may take a year but you will heal! I have also learned that the person you thought you cared for the most will be the one that hurts you the most.
  22. The last thing that I have learned and is by far the most important: I have learned to be Grateful. Be grateful for your life, your body, your family. Be grateful for what you have, a home, a place to sleep, for your food and water. Life is too short, appreciate everything even when things have gone wrong, life is full of downs but there will be many ups. Appreciate the people in your life because they will not always be there forever. If you’ve made a mistake, seek forgiveness, if you’ve been wronged, forgive but do not forget. If you’ve lost touch with someone, make an attempt to reconnect and make amends. If you love someone, tell them today because tomorrow is not promised.

How to make Cinnamon Banana Oatmeal

Hello & Welcome to my blog! My name is Yoleen!

Happy Sunday! I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend. I had an amazing weekend, it was my mums birthday and so my family and I celebrated by going out and having a nice dinner.

One of my favorite breakfast meals is oatmeal, specifically, a cinnamon and banana combination. Not only is it super tasty, its also healthy and simple to make. Sometimes, I like to mix up the flavors by adding cocoa or different fruits like, berries and apples. I usually have my oatmeal in a thicker consistency however I also enjoy them at a watery constistnecy with just milk and a little sugar.

Why I visited the Dead Sea

“stay positive even when it feels like life your life is falling apart.”

Welcome back to my blog! Happy Monday! As you may have read before, one of the reasons why I created my blog was to share my life experiences, specifically, how I deal  living with a chronic illness, rheumatoid arthritis. By writing about my struggles, my intention is to help atleast one person struggling with the same thing by providing my medical experiences and useful tips. I hope this blog post brings you comfort in knowing that “you are not alone.”

Background

In addition to struggling with arthritis, I have psoriasis, the medical term is psoriatic arthritis. These two illnesses go hand in hand. Psoriasis is also an autoimmune disease which means the immune system attacks the body it is designed to protect. The reasons for this is unknown and unfortunately there is NO cure. Medications are therefore used to suppress the disease and further damage to the body.

For those of you who have psoriasis will know how isolating it can be! You always feel like you’re alone, most of the time you feel ugly and the question WHY ME? runs in your thoughts everyday. You become extremely self conscious about what you look like, you cover up your body because you’re afraid of the comments like; what are those spots? why is your skin so red? bla bla bla. Not everyone understands the feeling of inflamed skin, the pain and constant itching. You’re always stressing you so never get better, in fact your symptoms get worse. Not only this, most medications that work for Psoriasis have some sort of side effect;  weight loss, weight gain, nauseas, shortness of breath, etc. You don’t just take one tablet and that is it, you take several tablets or even worse biologics. I know that these types of medications will work wonders however sometimes the side effects are pretty harsh and personally I hate any type of injection, let alone having to take them every week. I tried humira for a while and it helped me immediately. The results were amazing however I gained a huge amount of weight in short period of time, after being on and off for quite sometime I developed a bad reaction and it never worked as well as it did before. Therefore I decided to stick with methotrexate, a medication I am familiar with. Additionally, I developed arthritis really quickly in my hands which sadly led to some of my fingers developing deformities within a year. This, I would say was the most difficult change I had to live through and ultimately accept.

DEAD SEA

The Dead Sea is boarded by Israel, the West bank Bank and Jordan. It is a salt lake and is the lowest point on earth. Known for its high salt concentration in which people are able to float on the water, the Dead sea is also famous for the healing properties and its mineral black mud.

unnamed3unnamed5

The most recent time I visited, was last year. I stayed at the Dead Sea Spa Hotel, attached to the hotel is the Dead Sea Medical Clinic, where I received treatment for two and half weeks. My treatment included sun bathing two times a day for around 15- 20 minutes (under shade and under the sun), going to the Sea at least 2 twice a day for around 30 minutes. It is highly recommended to go to the sea early morning as the salt levels are very low and the water is gentle on the skin(it doesn’t burn as much) which is very true! The water is much cooler in the morning and it is more peaceful as opposed to going in the afternoon when there are lot of tourisits visiting. I got a daily scalp massage with salicylic acid and olive oil, this was by far the best part of my day! In addition to my treatment I had ice therapy and physiotherapy on my feet and hands every day. The treatment was draining, mainly because you’re under the scorching sun and there are a lot of steps to walk up and down, but the results are worth it! Many people battling all types of skin diseases, respiratory and joint conditions come to the dead sea, such as vitiligo, psoriasis, asthmas and many more!

I highly reccomend visiting the dead sea as it does help ease psoriasis! I am so happy that the dead sea actually exists because medications can sometimes make you feel awful and more than often they make you more sick than you really are. For me, going to Dead Sea was a miracle, in terms of my health, it provided me with hope that everything would be ok! I have been to the Dead Sea four times and every time I leave I feel ten times better both, mentally and physically.

The water does not cure you but it does put your psoriasis into remission for long time, thus reducing inflammation in arthritic joints. It would seem that you never had psoriasis before, that is how much of an effect the salty water has on your body. If you are interested in talking about your chronic illness or want to know what type of medication I have used. You can message me on twitter @YoleenGovender.

  • I am currently on Methotrexate 7.5 mg and folic acid (I should be taking a higher dose however I cannot handle feeling sick)
  • I also take celebrex 200 mg almost every day ( I am trying stop!)
  • Lastly I take a prednisone once in while when my wrist is in severe pain.

Thank you for reading this post, I hope you found it informative and enjoyable!

Make Up Favorites

Hello lovely people! Happy Monday!

For those of you who are new to my blog, welcome! welcome! I’m Yoleen!

Today I watched one of my favorite youtubers doing their make up and I thought why not write a blog post about my favorite make up. Normally, I don’t wear a full face of make up just on special occasions, I love make up and I love watching YouTube videos about make up even more.

The reason why I don’t wear make up all the time is because whenever I apply any foundation and powder, my face always looks cakey (make up term) although it looks good in pictures, it just does not in person.

I think it has to do with my type of skin, my skin is quite dry and I’ve always struggled with acne on my face, It’s not as bad now but I still have large pores that are very much visible! Make up doesn’t cover it at all. I am trying to take better care of my face so hopefully I’ll be able to find a foundation that suits my skin type.

The make up I use regularly would be lipstick. Lipsticks are my absolute favorite! My favorite ones are from Mac and Revlon.

My go to look would include, foundation and powder, mascara, a little bit of black eyeliner, brow pencil/gel, highlighter and a pink lip.

If you could give me some advice on how I can achieve a full face of flawless make up please let me know in the comment section! I would really appreciate it. I look forward to writing more about make up in the future and filming a make up video for YouTube!

Give my first beauty post a like!

Thank you for reading this blog post.
